Lately I have been feeling like I'm being pulled in too many directions, just with sewing, not to mention the rest of my life :-) The main parts of my business are making cards, making kits and patterns, teaching classes, and making art quilts. The art quilts are what I like to do the most, but that is what gets put to the back burner the most also, mostly because the other areas are more profitable, unfortunately. My recent trip to Denali Park and seeing Ree Nancarrow's quilts plus this raven one by Karin Franzen has given me the itch to put more time into my own art quilting. It's the middle of my busiest season though, so we'll see.... I took lots of pictures, so plenty of ideas are brewing! The second picture is another one of Ree Nancarrow's, also in the park. I got the package slip for the monstrous fabric order I have been waiting for, so watch tomorrow for a picture of the coolest fabric package ever! :-) It's torture to wait another day, but I guess I'm glad a bazillion dollars worth of fabric didn't fit in the mailbox....

I'm back from a spectacular trip to Denali National Park. The mountain cooperated and was out most of the time we were down there, which is pretty much unheard of, and especially this summer when we've had record breaking rain. (In the summer the mountain is behind clouds more than 70% of the time) We also saw lots of caribou, moose, and grizzly bears. I will do a post about that soon, but one of the highlights for me was finally seeing art quilter Ree Nancarrow's quilt "Seasons of Denali" in person. It requires riding a bus for several hours into the Eielson Visitor Center in the park, which I hadn't done in over 20 years, before the quilt was there. The quilt is 4 panels, for a total of 8 x 12 feet. The bus was only there for 30 minutes, not nearly long enough to soak it all in. I took lots of close up pictures, so I could at least study it more when I got home! The fabrics are all hand dyed, most of the animals and flowers are painted. So fun to see! Scroll down for some close up photos... And, I'm holding my breath waiting for my Starr Fabrics order, which includes fabric for the dragonfly kits, they should be out any time now, plus lots more fabric for me to play with! Here is this year's fair entry, titled "Serenity". After the fair it is going to a friend, who requested water, birch trees, iris', and a Psalm 1 theme. I just realized today that I didn't really put water in it. It occurred to me that if I added a horizon line, it would have water. So I played with it on my Brushes 3 app (free ipad app) to try it out. The first one looked too straight with all those curvy lines, so I tried another one. I will let the recipient decide if she wants it, it would show on the back at this point, but what a cool way to try something with no risk! It would work for quilting designs also.
I don't plan to make a pattern/kit for this one, too much thread sketching. Several fun ones in the works though, click here to see what patterns I do have! I just ordered a terrifying amount of Starr Fabrics, that will be lots of fun when it comes! |
