I've been quite negligent with my blog lately....first we had company, now we're getting ready for a big trip. That involved a bunch of last minute sewing projects, which I spent today doing, along with one of my daughters. I made a sundress, a denim skirt, the last 15 of 85 cards I needed to have done (they still need to be glued to the card stock) and a nifty pocket insert for a new bag I got that didn't have enough pockets. Now it has 6 more :-) My daughter made a pillow cover, a drawstring backback/bag, and she finished a couple of owl pillows and 20 little marble bags for the kids at a family reunion. The cards were already started, and the pillow top was already made, so we had a head start on some of the things at least! I don't need too many days like that, but my 4 years of sewing at a tailor shop using a stop watch pays off occasionally!
While my friend was visiting, she organized all of my fabric! It looks great, but now I'm afraid to touch it :-) I usually re-fold the piles a couple of times a year, but never quite this neatly... and I usually get sidetracked by all the pretty fabric I forgot I had :-)
Time to get back to work!
Well, I came in third in the recent quilt contest. The voting is part of the judging, but there is also a judge who awards a chunk of the points. The judge gave my quilt the second highest amount of points, but it wasn't enough to get me up to second place :-)
Our friend who was visiting and I made some birch bark projects yesterday. She made a basket and some stars. She practiced making the stars out of paper first. I made a basket and a hair thingy. My basket has some birch bark beads on it, and some woodburning. I made the hair thing with my sewing machine. The flower is free motion stitched even :-) The birch bark was a little too thick so it skipped a few stitches, but it mostly worked. Now it's back to making cards...I have a trip coming up so I need to get everyone stocked up before I go!
I have a friend visiting from Michigan, so I haven't been sewing quite as much, although we've been doing some still! And she even organized my fabric, maybe that will be tomorrow's post :-)
This is another owl pillow made by my 11 year old daughter, she has several now:-)

The Quilting Gallery blog hosts almost weekly quilt contests, each with a different theme. This week's theme is "Summer Fun", so I entered this quilt from a few years ago. It is based on a picture a friend took of her family canoeing near the camp where we both had worked. I also grew up there, met my husband, and got married in the chapel at the camp. (on the hill in the background) Shortly before this picture was taken, the camp had been largely burned in a forest fire. In this sunset picture, it was possible to imagine that it was still the same...

I am a homeschooling mom of three fun kids, who are now old enough that I have a little time to pursue my passion for sewing. After several years of making quilted cards and art quilts, I'm now starting to design kits and patterns Some of these are now available from Keepsake Quilting also. I teach classes at a local quilt shop, The Material Girls, and would love to do more traveling and teaching eventually. I am blessed to live in Alaska where I am surrounded by the inspiration provided by the beauty of God's creation!
